Betty Jean Hunter-Hoard entered this world on September 24, 1948, as the beloved daughter of the late Elder L.J. Hunter, Sr. and Mrs. Lucy Frances Hunter. On June 10, 2025, she peacefully transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly reward.
Betty was a proud graduate of Pearl High School, Class of 1967, and pursued studies in Social Administration at Tennessee State University for three years. Her dedication to learning led her to Nashville Area Vocational School, where she earned a certificate in Childcare. Throughout her career, she served as a Long-Distance Telephone Operator at South Central Bell and later as a Teacher’s Assistant in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, touching the lives of many.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was baptized in 1961 at Jackson Street Church of Christ, where her father served as an elder and her mother taught Sunday School. A devoted worshiper, Betty attended church regularly, embracing her faith through Sunday services, Bible study, and Vacation Bible School. She was widely known for her breathtaking soprano voice, singing with her siblings in the Nashville Youth Chorus, directed by Sister Beatrice Harris. Her passion for music extended to local and national Youth Conferences, where she found joy in fellowship and song.
Betty’s radiant smile and genuine laughter filled every space she occupied. She brought warmth, kindness, and love to those around her, always showing compassion and care. On May 15, 1970, she married the love of her life, Tyrone Servander Hoard. Though their union did not bring children, Betty wholeheartedly embraced the role of mother figure to her cherished nieces and nephews, creating bonds of love that would last a lifetime.
She found happiness in singing, watching religious sermons, reading her Bible, and spending countless hours on the phone with family and friends. Betty’s legacy is one of love, faith, and joy.
Preceding her passing were her parents, Elder L.J. Hunter, Sr. and Mrs. Lucy Frances Hunter; her siblings, Luther James Hunter, Sr., Michael Thomas Hunter, Sr., and Sylvester Thomas; and grandparents, Mr. Alfred and Samella Thomas, and Mr. Dave and Annie Hunter.
Betty’s memory will forever be treasured by her loving sister, Thelma (Tarver) Smith; her devoted brother, Richard (Roxanne) Hunter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
