Delmar Mitchell

June 12, 1945 — July 10, 2021

Delmar Kermit Mitchell was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 12, 1945. He was the eldest son of Delmar Leroy Mitchell and Lillian Singleton Dove.

Delmar attended grade school at Sacred Heart Academy in Winnetka, Illinois and later New Trier High School where he excelled in athletics. As captain of Cross Country, he led the team to the Illinois State Championship and was dubbed by the Chicago news media as “Run-Along-with-Mitch”. He spent summers camp athletic counselor between his homes in Glencoe, Illinois and Buffalo, New York.

Following an injury while attending the University of Illinois, he entered Tennessee State University in Nashville.
He was a member of the cross country team and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. serving as President at one time. He completed the Air Force ROTC training program and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force upon graduation in 1969. He earned BS and MS degrees from TSU and EDS from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

While at TSU, he met the love of his life, Edith Peterson, who also joined the Air Force and they enjoyed more than fifty-one inseparable years together. Experiencing some serious medical issues, he retired from the Air Force provided home support.

Delmar was predeceased by his parents, Delmar L. Mitchell of Buffalo, New York and Lillian Dove Mitchell of Evanston, Illinois. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife Brigadier General (Dr.) Edith Peterson Mitchell, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; children Dale Edith (Christopher) Hobbs of Columbia, Missouri and DeAnna (Joshua) Henze of Greenfield, Wisconsin; two brothers, Keith (Roseanne) Mitchell of Chicago and Darryl (Kirsteen) Mitchell of Chesapeake, Virginia, his loving stepmother, Carol Mitchell of Suffolk, Virginia; four grandchildren, Gabriella Mitchell, Jude Hobbs, Luke Hobbs and Lillian Henze and a host of special cousins, loving relatives and friends. Memorial services to be announced at a later date.
