Dr. Patricia Mitchell, beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, psychologist, and devoted community servant, completed her earthly journey on September 15, 2026.
A proud native of Nashville, Tennessee, Patricia was born to the late Archie and Fannie Mae Walker. She attended Meigs Middle Magnet School and Pearl High School, where she met the young man who would become the love of her life, Dr. Reavis L. Mitchell, Jr. What began as a high school romance grew into a marriage and partnership of more than 50 years.
Patricia believed deeply in the power of education. After graduating from Pearl High School, she briefly attended Clark Atlanta University before returning home to Nashville, where she earned her bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State University. She continued her education at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, where she earned Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Her doctoral research contributed to the early foundation of Head Start, the federal program created to promote school readiness, health, and family well-being for young children from low-income families. It was an early reflection of what would define Patricia’s professional life: using psychology and education to improve the lives and opportunities of children and families.
As a licensed school psychologist, she dedicated her expertise to supporting children and families and also maintained a private psychology practice for more than 30 years. Her career reflected not only her academic accomplishments, but also a lifelong commitment to helping others reach their potential.
Together, Patricia and Reavis built a life grounded in faith, education, family, and service. They raised four sons—Reavis Mitchell III, Dr. Roland Mitchell, Dr. Reagan Mitchell, and Dr. Roman Mitchell—and created a family culture where education and achievement were expected, but family always came first.
Patricia made their house a home. She created the traditions and celebrations that brought everyone back together year after year. Christmas, New Year’s Eve, the Fourth of July, birthdays, and countless other gatherings became occasions for family to fill the house, eat, laugh, celebrate, swim, and simply be together. Through those traditions, Patricia created more than memories. She created a sense of home and belonging that her children and grandchildren will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
That gift came naturally to someone whose own life was surrounded by family. As one of 12 children, Patricia treasured the bond she shared with her 11 brothers and sisters. She loved spending time with them and with her many nieces and nephews. Family gatherings, conversations, celebrations, and simply being in one another’s company were an essential part of who she was.
Her commitment to community extended well beyond her professional life. Patricia was a charter member of the Parthenon Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, was active in Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and was an Archousai of Sigma Pi Phi’s Chi Boule. Her civic involvement reflected her belief in service, fellowship, and creating opportunities for the generations that followed her.
Her faith remained a constant throughout her life. She was a longtime member of St. John’s A.M.E Church and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, which served as important spiritual homes for Patricia and the Mitchell family.
Patricia’s legacy lives most clearly in the people she loved. She was immensely proud of her sons and found a new kind of joy in being a grandmother to Faith, Heron, and Milan. Through them, the family she and Reavis began so many years ago continues into another generation.
Patricia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Reavis L. Mitchell, Jr.; her parents, Archie and Fannie Mae Walker, brothers, James Archie Lee and Anthony Walker, nephews, Marlowe Walker and Richard Stephenson, and niece, RaKale Walker.
She leaves to cherish her memory her four sons, Reavis Mitchell III, Dr. Roland Mitchell (Dr. Chaunda Mitchell), Dr. Reagan Mitchell (Dr. Micha Rhader), and Dr. Roman Mitchell (Lauren Mitchell); her precious granddaughters, Faith, Heron, and Milan; her brothers and sisters, Gloria Bridges, Archie Walker Jr., Susan Walker, Sandra (Richard) Stephenson, Brenda Walker, Gregory (Liliann) Walker, Carla Walker-Miller, Pamela Walker, Waweise Schmidt, and Vincent (Sharetta) Walker, Cheryl Guess (Deacon Harry Guess), Deborah Gardner, and Ralph Mitchell; and a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, colleagues, and community members.
The Mitchell house was a home because Patricia made it one. And the family she loved so deeply will continue to carry that home with them wherever they go.
