Gabrielle Shawane Akins was born June 27, 1980, and departed this life on May 7, 2023. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Willard (Butch) and Margaret Ann Weatherford Akins.
Gabrielle professed her love for Christ at an early age, and united with Greater Bethel AME Church. “Gabby” as she was affectionately called, was an active participant in many ministries of her church and beyond! She was an engaging member of the Florence Barnes Choir, the Rejoice Choir, Junior Ushers, Young People’s Division, Board of Christian Education on all levels. She taught classes and loved the interaction with students.
She attended Metro Public Schools. Gabby did her undergraduate studies at Middle Tennessee State University, and her graduate degree in Education at Tennessee State University.
She was a knowledgeable educator and was always in teacher mode. She shared her journey and the students loved “Ms. Gabby.” She was currently working at Richland Creek School (MNPS).
Gabrielle was totally devoted to her only son, Kaleb St. Clair Simmons, and he was the love of her life! She poured love and commitment into him whether on the football field or in church. They adored each other.
She leaves to cherish her memories son, Kalelb Simmons; parents, Marita and Lamont Shelton; devoted brother, Karliss (Alexis); grandmother, Barbara Shelton; devoted aunts, Dr. Jacqueline Akins and Rosalind Spann; great aunt, Lorraine Suggs; nieces, Kayla, Emily and Olivia Akins and a host of relatives and friends.
