Gladys Roberta Halsey

January 30, 1936 — April 30, 2020

Gladys Roberta Allen Halsey was born in Iron City, TN on January 30, 1936 to the late Robert and Veola Allen. Her family later moved to Nashville, TN where she resided until her death on April 30, 2020. She matriculated through the Nashville Public school system and was a proud graduated of Pearl High School.

She married the late James Roy Halsey, Sr. on December 10, 1955 and to this union six children were born. She was a dedicated mother and wife and served on the PTO board at Rose Park where she was on the Ms. Rose Park PTO court for 1968-69. Gladys was employed as a Quality Control Shoe Inspector with Johnson & Murphy Shoe Company, a subsidiary of Genesco, for 43 years before she retired in the late 1990’s.

Gladys was a faithful member of Phillips Chapel CME Church for over 60 years. She served as a devoted member of the Carnation Club and the Usher Board until her health diminished. Cooking was one of her greatest passions. She enjoyed providing meals for others and was well loved for her generosity and delicious food. Gladys was known for providing meals to the TSU Women’s Basketball & Volleyball teams, Maplewood Football teams, and many families near and far.

Gladys is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Witherspoon; son, Anthony D. Halsey; and grandchildren, Sherika Cortner and James (Hammer) Head, III. She is survived by sister, Henrietta A. Smith; children, Deborah J. (Floyd Tryon) Halsey, Gail Halsey, Karen (Bobby) Frierson, James (Leticia) Halsey, Jr., and Valencia L. Jordan; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; surviving aunt, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday, May 6th at 11:00am.
