Gwendolyn Evans Dobbins, age 91, peacefully entered eternal rest on April 15, 2026. She was born on June 10, 1934, in Decatur, Alabama, to the late Merlin and Odessa Evans. She was the eldest of four daughters.
A lifelong learner and devoted educator, Mrs. Dobbins earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Alabama A&M College, a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan, and pursued additional studies and certification at Tennessee State University. Following in the footsteps of her parents, she dedicated her life to the field of education, beginning her teaching career in 1955.
Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, she taught in Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee. Among her many meaningful experiences, she served in a two-room schoolhouse as both teacher and principal—an embodiment of her versatility, leadership, and commitment. She retired in 1996, leaving behind a lasting legacy of excellence, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her students.
On December 27, 1959, she was united in holy matrimony to Rev. William C. Dobbins. Their union was blessed with two children, Bill and Angela. As the devoted wife of a pastor, Mrs. Dobbins faithfully served as First Lady in each congregation her husband led. During their years in Florida, she graciously served as organist and pianist until full-time musicians were secured. She also stood beside her husband in his efforts to run for state office and in his courageous work to desegregate lunch counters in Pensacola, Florida.
In 1968, the family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where Rev. Dobbins was appointed pastor of Clark Memorial United Methodist Church. For 15 years, Mrs. Dobbins labored faithfully in ministry alongside her husband. Her service included active involvement in the United Methodist Women, the Sanctuary Choir, the Counting Ministry, and co-chairing the student acolytes. Following her husband’s untimely passing in January 1983, she remained a steadfast and devoted member of Clark Memorial, continuing her service until her health declined in 2019.
In her later years, Mrs. Dobbins resided in an assisted living community in Ashland City, Tennessee. She found great joy in spending time with her children, son-in-law, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters. She remained spiritually connected by watching Clark Memorial’s services via Zoom and treasured visits from family and friends. She also delighted in singing hymns with fellow residents and staff, sharing her enduring love of music and faith.
Mrs. Dobbins was a proud Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., NAACP, National Education Association, and an active member of the Gaiete de Coeur Art and Study Club, where she cultivated lasting friendships and contributed meaningfully to her community.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. William Curtis Dobbins; her parents, Merlin and Odessa Evans; and her sisters, Merline E. Lyle and Mary Carolyn Shine.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: her son, William Curtis Dobbins, II; her daughter, Angela M. Huff (Barry); granddaughters, Lauren N. Williams (Brandon) and Meagan Huff; grandson, Evan K. Bailey; sister, Gloria Smith; great-granddaughters, Bailey and Riley Williams; and a host of devoted cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mrs. Dobbins’ life was a beautiful testament to faith, service, education, and love. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched and will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
