Henry Chester Ligon Jr. was born on April 23, 1951, in Springfield, Tennessee, to Henry C. Ligon Sr. and Rosie L. Wilcox Ligon. After an extended illness, he peacefully departed this life on April 12, 2026, hearing the Lord’s whisper, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant,” as he was called to his heavenly home.
Affectionately known as “Chester” or “Chess” by family and friends, he was a shining light to all who knew him. His warmth, wisdom, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Henry was the eldest of eight boys and spent his childhood working on his father’s farm.He was an active member of his local 4-H Club, where he successfully completed agricultural projects, raising corn, swine, and various tobacco crops. He participated in county fairs, served as president of his chapter, and conducted demonstrations on fitting show hogs, stripping and classing tobacco, and controlling tobacco insects. Although farming did not become his profession, it remained a lifelong passion and a meaningful way for him to spend time with his family.
Henry attended Bert High School before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, where he began working at Tennessee State University. It was there that he met the love of his life, Ella Jane Williams. The two were united in marriage on March 8, 1971, and shared 51 years of enduring love, partnership, and friendship.
He later built a successful 32-year career in the trucking industry, working as a driver for H.D. Lee Distribution, NuCar Carriers, and Allied Automotive Systems. After retirement, Henry found joy in spending time with his grandchildren, tending to the family farm, and faithfully serving his church. At an early age, Henry dedicated his life to Christ. He later became a devoted member of First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. In 1994, he was ordained as a Deacon, a role he carried with humility and commitment until his health declined. He served his church and community faithfully, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed.
Henry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ella Jane Ligon; his parents, Reverend Henry C. Ligon Sr. and Rosie L. Ligon; his granddaughter, Kennedi Covington; and his brother, Billy Wayne Ligon.
He leaves to treasure his memory his loving children: Kathryn (Ralph) Pinnick, Tiffany (Mark) Brown, and Tetrick (Cynthia) Johnson. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Christopher, De’Longino, Kristopher, TeAnna, Ta’mya, Mark Jr., Braden, Jordyn, Kayla, and Mike; ten great-grandchildren; his siblings: Lewis (Dellcenia), Robert (Tanuverne), David (Ivory), Ray (Barbara), Clifford (Christy), Terry Ligon, Buford Braden,Bonita (Nelson) Glover, Vivian Braden, and Stephen Braden; along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, including Doris Thomas and Harold Goins, as well as his church family at First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church. Henry “Chester” Ligon Jr.’s legacy of faith, love, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
