Reverend James Edward Johnson Sr. passed away on October 6th, 2024 at Hendersonville Hospital, Hendersonville, Tennessee.
James Edward Johnson Sr. was born and reared in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. He is the sixth child of Reverend Ira Bryant Johnson, Sr and Martha Christine Johnson. Both parents have preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Lamar Johnson and Ira Bryant Johnson Jr., and his sister, Evelyn Joyce.
Reverend Johnson is known for being a great and kind man of God.
Reverend Johnson was educated in the public schools of Davidson County where he attended Meigs and Pearl High School. He furthered his education at the Culinary Art Institute and Nashville Barber College.
Reverend Johnson married the love of his life, the former Joyce B. DeBerry. To this union they raised two children, James Jr. and Jeaneen (Candi) Johnson
Reverend Johnson served four years in the US Army and ETSd as a Spc5. Reverend Johnson retired as a Court Officer after 38 years of service from the Metro Davidson County Courthouse, Fifth Circuit Court. He retired as a Lieutenant with the Capital Police, Nashville Tennessee.
Reverend Johnson acknowledged his belief in Jesus Christ at the age of thirteen under the direction of the Holy Spirit. He joined Cleveland Street Baptist Church in Nashville Tennessee under the leadership of the late Reverend W. M. Pitts. In October 1980, Reverend Johnson and his wife, Joyce joined Rockland Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor John A. Perry and Reverend Lloyd S. Peoples Sr. Reverend Johnson served the Lord as Associate Pastor at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Portland, TN under the direction of Pastor Dennis Page. Reverend Johnson was Pastor of Parker’s Chapel, Portland TN, he also served as Associate Pastor at Stark Knob Missionary Baptist under the direction of Pastor Lloyd S. Peoples Sr. and Associate Pastor at Edenwold Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Melvin Curtis.
Reverend Johnson leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 70 years, Joyce B. (DeBerry) Johnson; son, Minister James Edward Johnson Jr. (Valarie), and daughter, Jeaneene (Candi) Johnson. Reverend Johnson’s legacy includes six grandchildren, James III (Jessica), Jeremy, Jeffery Todd (Catherine), Christian, Tyanna-Reshea, and Jameia; 13 (thirteen) great-grandchildren, four (4) great-great grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Jean Willams and Martha Sue Fitzpatrick and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family, friends and one goddaughter.
