Kara Lynn Thompson, Esq. was born on March 6, 1968 at Meharry Hubbard Hospital in Nashville, TN to Dr. Ira and LaVera Husbands Thompson. She was baptized as an infant at Clark Memorial United Methodist Church and was confirmed at the age of 12.
Kara received her primary and secondary education in the metro Nashville, TN public school system having attended Wade, Jordonia, and Cumberland Elementary Schools, Ewing Park Junior High School and graduated Whites Creek Comprehensive High School in 1986.
She attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN from 1986 to 1990 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the Purdue College of Liberal Arts in May 1990, With Distinction.While a junior at Purdue, Kara was pledged to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and initiated via Epsilon Rho Chapter on April 25, 1989 and was president of her pledge class.
After a successful career in public relations in Atlanta, GA, Kara embarked on a new pathway to become an attorney and attended Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, from 1996 to 1999, earning her Juris Doctorate degree in June of 1999.
Kara was an accomplished employment lawyer and entrepreneur in Atlanta, most recently serving as Director of Corporate Human Resources (EEO & Programs) at Atrium Hospitality and Managing Member of Kara Thompson Enterprises, LLC, which provided public relations, event management, and human resources consulting services. She launched “Kara's Creations Jewelry”, specializing in original, handcrafted beaded pieces in semi-precious gemstones and unique materials, in 2013.
Kara was an active member of the Atlanta Chapter of Girl Friends, Incorporated, the Buckhead Cascade City Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, and served on the board of directors of Jerusalem House in Atlanta. She was an integral member of the Sistah Sistah Book Club in Atlanta and, in 2001, founded Kara’s Dining Club, which was featured in Essence Magazine in 2007. Additionally, Kara was a member of the National Bar Association, Gate City Bar Association, the Atlanta Women’s Foundation Destiny Fund Class of 2009 and was a Founding Member of Impact Church of Atlanta.
Kara made her transition to live forever with the Lord on Saturday, June 15, 2019. She leaves to cherish fond and precious memories her parents, Dr. Ira Thompson and Mrs. LaVera Husbands Thompson of Nashville, TN, her brother, Edward Steven (Tara) Thompson of Atlanta, GA, her niece, Sasha Milan Thompson, and her nephew, Tyler Hamilton Thompson of Atlanta, GA, aunts, uncles, 19 first cousins, 11 line sisters, and countless friends and classmates, Sorority sisters, Girl Friends, Sister Links, Dining Club and Book Club members, fellow attorneys, coworkers, Impact Church members, members of the philanthropic community in Atlanta and a host of clients of Kara’s Creations Jewelry worldwide.
Her Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 28, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Impact Church, 2323 Sylvan Rd, East Point, GA 30344. Services entrusted to Murray Brothers Cascade Chapel 404-349-3000 www.mbfh.com.
