Marvin D. Spears, beloved teacher, coach and public school administrator transitioned to his heavenly home on Saturday, December 6, 2025 after a short illness in Nashville, TN. He attended public schools in Corpus Christi, Texas where he enjoyed sports and graduated from Roy Miller High School. He matriculated at the University of North Texas and received a BBA in 1972. He furthered his education at Texas A&M-CC and earned his masters degree in 1983. He enjoyed a thirty -plus year career in public K-12 education in Texas and Tennessee. He retired in 2011 with Metro Nashville Public Schools.
Active in the Corpus Christi community, he received a mayoral appointment to the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. Marvin was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and a 32nd degree member of Port City #581 Masonic Lodge where he served as financial secretary. Marvin was a Life Member of the Corpus Christi Branch of the NAACP, working tirelessly for civil rights and equal opportunity. In Nashville, Marvin served as treasurer of the Fisk, Meharry, TSU Faculty Breakfast Club.
He was inducted into the inaugural class of the West Oso High School Hall of Fame and the Roy Miller High School Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments, leadership, and commitment to youth development and mentoring.
In 1972, Marvin married his college sweetheart and they have two wonderful sons, Marcellus, mechanical engineer, and Cedric Spears, architect. He enjoyed westerns, sports, and visits with his grandchildren.
Marvin was predeceased by his mother and father, Mr. Cornelius and Mrs. Willie Mae Hopkins Spears, four brothers , and three sisters. Brothers included Arthur Gene Spears, Carl Spears, Otis Spears (Maria), and Abner Spears; three sisters: Marjorie Spears O’Neal (Rufus), Joyce Spears, and Odessa Spears Holland.
Mourning Marvin’s transition, while cherishing their many precious memories are his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Coleman Spears; sons; Marcellus (Amy) Spears of Pittsburgh, PA and Cedric Spears of Houston TX; grandchildren, Simone, Noelle, Solo, and Jaxson Spears of Pittsburgh, PA; a sister, Dr. Beverly A. Spears of Houston, TX; brother, Lee A. Spears (Ada) of Corpus Christi, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Dr. Paulette Coleman of Nashville, TN; Bonnie Spears of Houston, TX; and Willie B. Spears of Corpus Christi, TX. One uncle, Maynard Spears, Sr. (Sylvia) of Los Angeles, CA; one God Son, Rev. Keith Jones of Houston, TX.; and a vast number of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and other extended family members and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025 at Lee Chapel A.M.E. Church in Nashville, TN at 3:00 p.m. under the direction of Lewis and Wright Funeral Home of Nashville, TN. On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Service of Reflections will be held at Brooks Worship Center in Corpus Christi, TX under the direction of Elite Life Celebrations of Houston, TX.
