Mary E. Jernigan

Mary Elizabeth Jernigan, was born April 28, 1950 in Cross Plains, Tn. She departed this life on May 19, 2026 at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital, Nashville, Tn. Mary was preceded in death by her parents John Russell Jernigan and Eva Nell Scharklet- Jernigan. Also preceding her in death: sister Mattie V Jernigan-Hutchens and brother Oscar L. Jernigan. Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, joining Second Grove CME Church in White House Tn. Upon the family moving to Nashville, along with her mother and siblings, they joined Lee Chapel AME Church. During her early years, she attended the Metropolitan-Davidson County schools, graduating from North High in 1968. She attended Tennessee State University but with life changes to motherhood her path was altered. She began working at Model City and later obtain a position at the United States Postal Service in 1974, where she was employed until retirement, a career that spanned over 40 years. Mary was very active in her church, and active member of the Steward Board. She "LOVED" to sing and was active in her church choir. Mary was also a proud member of New Spirit and Friends and enjoyed participating in countless cantatas. In addition, she was also an active participant in the Meals on Wheels Program. Cooking and serving others was sormething that gave her great satisfaction and joy. Mary leaves to cherish her memory: her only child, son Jeffrey (Jennifer) Jernigan; niece Kesha Jernigan (whom she took in to raise when her father past); brother John M, Jernigan, and sisters Lillie B Jernigan Knight and Deborah Jernigan; grand-daughter T'Angela Jernigan and grandson Justen Jernigan; nephews Kenneth( Lonyette ) Hutchens, Reginal Hutchens, John P (Sandra) Jernigan, Antwon (Africa) Jernigan, Adrian Knight; great-nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
