Dr. Mary Parks — also known as “Dr. Mom” — a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31,2024 at the age of 90 years old. She leaves behind a legacy of music, education, and service to all that touched the lives of many.
Born on July 15, 1934, Dr. Parks discovered her passion for music at a young age. Her extraordinary talent as a concert pianist provided opportunities for her to perform in venues around the country. Her love for music was not just a personal pursuit but a gift she shared with others, inspiring countless students, organizations and audiences alike.
In addition to her musical achievements, Dr. Parks was a dedicated scholar. She earned her Doctorate in Education from Tennessee State University, and dedicated her life to the field of education, serving as a teacher before rising through the ranks to serve on the school board for Davidson County. It was here that her leadership and passion for learning made a lasting impact on countless students, educators and administrators alike.
A woman of deep faith and activism, Dr. Parks was a dedicated member of the Alpha Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for 50 years. It was here that she forged lifelong friendships and worked on initiatives that left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone she encountered. Through her decades of service, she exemplified the values of sisterhood, scholarship, and community upliftment, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of women who enter into the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for decades to come.
Dr. Parks was also a charter member of The Parthenon (TN) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. Through her work with this esteemed organization, she played a crucial role in developing and implementing programs that uplifted and empowered countless individuals.
Above all, Dr. Parks was a loving and devoted family woman. She is survived by her son, David Parks; her granddaughter, Davita Parks; and her daughter-in-law, Johnsey Steppe-Parks. Her family was her greatest joy, and she leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and cherished memories that will endure in their hearts forever.
Dr. Parks will be remembered not only for her remarkable accomplishments but also for her kindness, generosity, and the beautiful music she brought into the world. Her spirit will continue to live on through the lives she touched, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Lewis and Wright Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the The Ivy Center of Nashville Foundation, reflecting her lifelong commitment to education and community service.
