Morris Mays

June 12, 1939 — January 29, 2023

Morris Mays was born on June 12, 1939 in Burkville, Alabama to Mary Ella and Thomas Mays. He made his peaceful journey from this world to a place of eternal rest on Sunday, January 29, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

He graduated from Lowndes County Training School in Haynesville, Alabama. He and his twin brother, Horace, were co-captains of the basketball and football teams.

Morris accepted Christ in his life at a young age and was a member of Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. He continued to show his love for the Lord by worshipping and serving at Schrader Lane Church of Christ in Nashville, TN.

In 1960, he married his childhood sweetheart and soul mate, Callie Bennett. They shared 62 years of marital bliss and one beautiful child, Nina Nicole.

Morris was employed as a truck driver with Yellow Freight for over 40 years until his retirement. He loved his job and being able to call family and friends for his infamous long chats on the road.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ella and Thomas, and brother, Horace Mays, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his fondest memories a loving wife, Callie Mays; devoted daughter, Nina (Christopher) Lee; devoted granddaughters, Kaylan Johnson and Jordyn Hooks; sister, Diane McCants; brothers-in-law, Julius Bennett, Charlie Bennett, Franklin (Mary) Bennett, Leon (Addie) Bennett, and JC Bennett; sisters-in-law, Sally Hurst, Dorothy (Larry) Leslie, Rose Jones, and Earnestine (Anderson) Ayers; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
